Alvar Aalto

Alvar Aalto, 1898-1976, Architect

Alvar Aalto studied architecture in Helsinki and, from 1946-48, was a visiting professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge (USA). His approach was a major influence on 20th-century architecture.

His work was inspired by nature and the environment in which his buildings were set. With references to the Finnish landscape, he was one of the first ‘regionalists’ in modern architectural history. Besides pragmatic usability, he always considered human wellbeing in his functional architectural designs. This is the reason why he put so much emphasis on the interior of his buildings.

Besides his buildings, other products such as a motorboat, a water tower and his famous pale-wood furniture are testament to the creativity of this multi-talented designer.

Sofa Bed

In just one simple step, the legendary Alvar Aalto sofa is transformed into a comfortable bed. Generations of manufacturers have made small amendments to adjust the design to new production techniques. After 75 years, wb form is now returning to the original design and manufactures the sofa with all its clever detailing in small editions, defined by outstanding craftsmanship: with the recessed, flat-metal cross bar, the raising mechanism for the seat, the flat spring core upholstery and the textile covering with welted seams.
